Podcasts I Love

Podcasts are brilliant, you guys. For those of you who aren’t familiar with podcasts (& I know you’re out there), a podcast is basically a free, on-demand, internet radio show.

I listen to a bunch of podcasts that make me laugh so hard. A few that make me think. Some that are music. So I thought I would share them with you, & maybe you can find something new with which to delight your ear-balls.

Bullseye With Jesse Thorn. Compelling guests, an engaging host who asks insightful questions, sprinklings of underground hiphop. I always come away from it with new books to read, movies to watch, records to listen to scribbled into my notebook. Bullseye is what convinced me to watch my current television obsession, Downton Abbey.

CBC Radio 3 & Top 30 Chart. These two podcasts are my hook into new music. Well, those & Michael. I find I have to skip the hosts pretty much all the time (because I find them irritating), but I learn about so much new music from these!

Day 6. If you’re an avid CBC listener, you might remember the show Go, hosted by Brent Bambury. He also used to host Ottawa’s All In a Day. Now he’s the host of this amazing podcast. It’s smart, it’s challenging, it has great ideas. It’s also quite objective, which appeals to people who get angry about those “knee-jerk liberals over at the CBC” (which makes me laugh but whatever).

Doug Loves Movies. They play these games with movie titles that are amazing. Build-a-Title is my favourite. I played it with Jaime & Michael last week & the winning title was QuickSilver BulLet the Right One In the Name of the Father of the Bride of Frankenstein Meets the WolfMan of La ManChariots of Fire In the Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow Never DEyes Wide Shut. Seriously so much fun, y’all.

The Moth. Stories told by storytellers & everyday people. Sometimes compelling, sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, nearly always fascinating.

The Nerdist. Oh my gosh. So funny. Such interesting interviews. My colleagues think that I’m crazy, because I sit at my desk giggling away every time I listen to it. Bonus points: host Chris Hardwick has a great self-help book called The Nerdist Way: How To Reach the Next Level (In Real Life - do yoursef a major favour & get this book. An amazing combination of humour, self-help & productivity. Seriously, so good.

The Pod F. Tompkast. Okay, so sometimes his riffing gets on my nerves, & sometimes the way he laughs at his own jokes makes me mental, HOWEVER the bits he plays from his shows are very, very funny. Love it.

Savage Love. Yeah, you know Dan Savage. His podcast is just as insightful as his column. Listen to it through headphones. Or with your love.

Sex Nerd Sandra. You might not have heard of Sandra Daugherty, but see above. Except add in co-host Dave Ross whose voice is amazing.

SuperEgo. Improvised sketches of completely crazy people. So funny. Listen to an episode multiple times, because you’ll be laughing so much that you’ll miss things, for sure.

This American Life. Compelling stories told around a central theme for the week. Hosted by hipster icon Ira Glass, put out by NPR. I look forward to my new one every week.

Thrilling Adventure Hour. Done in the style of old-fashioned radio, it’s incredible. I want to be Sadie Doyle. It’s taped in front of a live audience, & the laughter is infectious. Guest voices by Nathan Filion, Dave Foley, Bruce McCollough, Paget Brewster, Paul F. Tompkins, &c.

Wiretap. This show used to be pure comedy, but it seems to be taking an interesting trajectory with more interviews. It’s another indie darling, & I think you might like it!

What do you like to listen to? I’d love to add more things to my playlist – feel free to e-mail me, comment, or we can talk on Twitter or Facebook!

Speaking of Jesse Thorn, do you ever read his Put This On website?

    http://putthison.com

It’s all about men’s style, but I wager you’d get a kick out of it if you aren’t reading it already. My favourite part of the site is that I don’t agree with everything they say! That comes as a great relief to me! It makes me feel less like a mindless droid and more like somebody who has his own ideas about personal style and wants to take inspiration from other people’s thoughts, rather than copying them wholesale.

One thing I do agree with them on, though, is the awesomeness of Drake’s ties and pocket squares. But that’s another story for another time ;)

You’re the second person to have told me about this website – I’ve just added it to my reader, so I’ll be sure to check it out! Thanks!
